I think I just experienced peak 'shark-jumping' for CAPTCHA forms.

I received an email (via a newsletter I already subscribe to) highlighting a newly released report, with a link to download the report.

I clicked the link and (tiresomely) there was the obligatory "please enter your email address to access the report" prompt (2nd customer experience fail).

But I've grown used to that completely unnecessary hurdle.

However, when I entered my email and clicked submit, I was shown a CAPTCHA form ("please click on all the photos that show a crosswalk").

So let me get this right:

- You sent an email to me inviting me to download a report
- You included a download link
- You didn't bother adding smarts to recognise that I clicked the link
- You asked me to tell you my email address (again)
- You didn't bother adding smarts to recognise that you already know me (via my email)

AND
- You make someone submitting a known email address fill out a CAPTCHA form before sending a link to download the report you marketed to me via email

Truly stupefying.
