Many moons ago, as a young law student, I found myself in Perth for a ‘moot court trial’.
Beyond competing, I have 3 vivid memories.
First, we were billeted at the Uni. We were drafted into a sculling competition in the same pub that Bob Hawke set his drinking record. We won.
Second, on one drunken pub tour, I ordered my first dish of nachos. I have been a fanatic ever since.
Third, we did a tour of the arts district.
I found a hefty and obstinately proportioned ‘coffee table’ book full of black and white photos of (well) women.
The presentation was immaculate. It was a limited edition. And expensive.
I decided against buying it.
And I regretted that decision for the better part of 20yrs.
Fast forward to living in Erskineville. My daughter and I had wandered through many shops without success looking for a present for a friend.
I wanted to bail and head home.
She really wanted to check this last shop.
I said no and we walked away. She called me out: you say we should always explore new things.
I could not argue with that. So we entered the store.
There, out back, was the same book I had seen some 20 years ago.
So I bought it, and it sits on my coffee table as a reminder to never forget to explore new things. You never know what you will find.
