In numerous conversations with Australian CEOs and senior business leaders, I’ve been asked for bold, innovative ideas to solve complex business challenges—something fresh and groundbreaking.

Yet, more often than I’d like to admit, the response after presenting those ideas is always the same: “Great… but where has this worked before?”

It’s a paradox. We want innovation, yet we wait for global proof before acting.

In a country of just 27 million, this follow-first mindset keeps industries playing catch-up rather than leading change.

The problem? By the time there’s proof, the opportunity is gone. While we analyse case studies, others are writing them.

Leadership in Australia is inherently conservative—understandable in a (comparatively) small market. But waiting for certainty is the riskiest strategy of all. The real competitive advantage lies in calculated bets:

🔹 Start small, but start now. Test ideas instead of waiting for perfect precedent.
🔹 Shift from “proof first” to “potential first.” Not everything worth doing has a playbook.
🔹 Reward smart risks. Companies that learn fast, adapt, and iterate will outpace those that wait.

The future belongs to those willing to shape it—not just follow it. How do we shift Australian business culture from cautious observers to bold pioneers?
