DeepSeek's latest research breakthrough represents a fundamental shift in AI development methodology, delivering a complete, openly accessible roadmap for building ChatGPT-level intelligence at a fraction of the cost of traditional approaches. The 80-page research paper mentioned in the video challenges the closed, capital-intensive approaches of major tech companies by demonstrating that efficiency and transparency can achieve competitive results without massive computational budgets.

This may, in hindsight, be seen as the final nail in OpenAI’s coffin, with the pursuit of an ad-based business model as the penultimate. OpenAI is fast becoming the Netscape of the AI era - an early leader and innovator that proved unable to hold its ground and ultimately fell by the wayside.

It may also indicate that traditional VC-funded logic- "S/he with the most dollars wins" - will prove ineffective in the AI space. Chinese model companies are eschewing proprietary, compute-intensive strategies - partly in response to US GPU export bans - and are opening both models and, increasingly, model design research. This implies a view that the real market opportunity lies not in model development or ownership, but in practical downstream implementation.
