The SaaS Apocalypse thesis finally has a mechanism. For years, people predicted that AI would hollow out the long tail of SaaS. But the prediction always lacked a delivery vehicle: how, exactly, would that happen? Agentic systems are the answer. An agent that can operate across multiple interfaces or build a bespoke internal tool on demand doesn't need a dedicated SaaS subscription for every function. It just does the thing.
Enterprise software buying decisions are already changing. The question is no longer "which tool should we buy for this workflow?" It's increasingly "should we buy a tool, or configure an agent?"
For SaaS vendors without deep workflow integration or genuinely proprietary data, the answer is going to be uncomfortable. For buyers, the leverage has never been higher.
