The findings from recent Stanford research into AI-based hiring platforms are disturbing. They are also, unfortunately, not surprising.
When organisations remove humans from the earliest stages of recruitment, they don’t just automate efficiency. They automate bias - and at scale.
The study analysed 4 million job applications and found evidence of both racial bias and what researchers call “systemic rejection”. When multiple employers rely on the same AI screening tools, candidates rejected once are far more likely to be rejected everywhere. Entire careers can be derailed before a human ever reads a CV.
The consequences extend well beyond recruitment. Prolonged unemployment affects financial security, confidence, mental health and families. For many applicants, an opaque algorithm has become an invisible gatekeeper with no accountability and no right of appeal.
AI should help people make better decisions - not replace human judgement in decisions that fundamentally shape people’s lives.
Efficiency is valuable. But not at the cost of fairness.
