Meta demonstrated this week that it can convert brain signals into text - non-invasively, using an external headset.

That sentence deserves more attention than it has received.

Until now, the assumption was that practical brain-computer interfaces required surgical implants, limiting adoption to relatively niche medical use cases. Non-invasive BCI changes that equation entirely. No surgery, no hospital, no recovery period.

The immediate application is profoundly positive. Restoring communication to people with ALS, locked-in syndrome or severe motor impairment would be genuinely life changing. That alone justifies the research.

But the longer-term commercial, legal and ethical implications are enormous.
If a device can infer intent from neural signals well enough to generate text, the obvious question is: what else could it infer?

We are not yet at the point where thoughts are directly legible (Meta reports a 61% word accuracy). But the trajectory is becoming increasingly clear - and our governance frameworks are nowhere near ready.

It is also not difficult to imagine how technology like this could be misused. Coercive use during police investigations. Mandatory screening by employers. Surveillance by authoritarian governments. Once a technology exists, history suggests it rarely remains confined to its original purpose.

The challenge is not whether this technology will advance. It will.

The challenge is whether our laws, institutions and societal norms evolve quickly enough to ensure it remains a tool for empowerment rather than intrusion.
