Airbnb's most important AI decision was organisational: organise by missions

Airbnb's most important AI decision was an organisational one.

Its CTO, Ahmad Al-Dahle, previously led the launch of Meta's Llama models and joined Airbnb in January. He told Latent Space that 60% of Airbnb's code is now AI-authored and that it has shipped nearly 80% more features and improvements year on year. Roughly half of support tickets are now resolved purely by AI, though Airbnb's own Q2 results put the figure at nearly 45%. Airbnb's Q2 report says groceries took eight to nine months to develop and airport pickups about six weeks, after the second team reused what the first had built.

The numbers are striking. The operating choices behind them are more instructive. Product, design and engineering teams skip the handoffs between them and work directly on prototypes, with the code itself as the artifact the team reasons about. Teams are organised around objectives and missions rather than features. "If you're a company that organizes by feature development, you're going to struggle in the age of AI," he says. "If you're a company that organizes by objectives and missions and results that you're trying to achieve, you're going to be fine.

Two disciplines stand out. Airbnb is careful about what it keeps with humans: safety issues, for example, still need a person. And Al-Dahle is pushing a rule that every engineer must be able to explain what they built, even if an AI generated the pull request. His reasoning is that junior engineers will otherwise never learn the craft of design, architecture and testing.

Most enterprises I read about are buying tools and leaving the org chart untouched. Airbnb's account is of a company that changed how teams work first.

Which is the harder change in your organisation: the technology, or who reports to whom?
