ChatGPT image-generation ads: the early CPA signal is single-advertiser and self-reported, so test with independent measurement

The next search ad may be a picture you asked for.

OpenAI announced on 5 October a new visual ad format for ChatGPT, to be tested during image generation for users on its Free and Go plans. Testing begins later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labelled, will stay separate from the image being created, and will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. It also says its placement guardrails are meant to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations.

The number marketers will notice is the early performance data. According to DV Rockerbox, as reported by OpenAI, WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads was 15.3 per cent lower than its blended paid-search benchmark. That is a single advertiser, an attribution estimate and OpenAI's own account of a partner's finding, so it is a signal to test rather than a result to budget on. OpenAI also says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, which is its own figure.

Two shifts are running together. The first is economic. If conversational ads beat search on acquisition cost, budgets will move, and search loses its hold on commercial intent. The second is behavioural. People are no longer typing keywords and scanning links. They ask for an outcome and accept what comes back, which puts the advertiser inside the answer rather than beside a list of links.

The open question is trust. Search users learnt to discount the sponsored results at the top of the page. Will they apply the same scepticism to an assistant many of them treat as a confidant?

My view is that brands should test early, insist on independent measurement, and decide in advance what they will not do in a channel where the line between help and persuasion is thinner than it has ever been.
