Figma agent pricing ends the free beta: metered AI credits turn a vendor acquisition cost into a customer invoice (State of AI)

Figma's design agent left beta on 6 October, and every prompt now draws down the same AI credit pool customers already spend on Figma Make. For four and a half months it cost them nothing. According to State of AI's reporting, Figma carried that cost itself: cost of revenue rose 117 per cent in the June quarter, mostly from AI infrastructure and hosting, and management said it was running AI features it did not yet charge for, the beta agent among them.

The pattern is the useful part, and I think it is missing from many business cases. Beta pricing is an acquisition cost paid by the vendor. When the vendor's own margins come under pressure, that cost moves to the customer's invoice. The same article notes pricing across software shifting from seats to usage, which means a licence fee stops describing what a team is really paying for.

Here is my own extension, which is not from the article. A free agent gets used for everything. A metered one forces someone to decide which work deserves the credits, and I suspect few organisations have given that decision an owner. Is a junior designer's exploratory prompt worth more or less than a senior designer's production run? Nobody has been asked, because until now nobody had to answer.

Credit limits will also show what the agent is worth to each team, but only to someone reading the usage data rather than just approving the invoice.

If an AI business case was built on beta-period economics, I would re-run it at the metered price before the renewal does it for you.

Another extension of mine: procurement sees a price, finance sees a credit pool, and the people who know which prompts produce value are the ones who use them, who are rarely asked. A sensible first step is to have each team name its three most valuable uses of the agent, then check whether actual consumption matches the list.
