What survives copying (Ruben Hassid)

In a post published on 30 October, Ruben Hassid reports pointing Claude Code at an award-winning agency website and having a working clone deployed in about an hour, followed by three more sites for his own company, one prompt each, no edits. He does not write code, by his own account. This is a demonstration he narrates himself rather than an independently replicated result, and he sells a paid community teaching the workflow, so discount accordingly.

The caveats are as instructive as the demo. A clone carries the original's images and design until you replace them, which is a permission and IP question a business should answer before publishing, not after. A copied front end also says nothing about what sits behind it: the backend, the security posture, the maintenance, the data. Copying the visible layer was never the hard part of running a business.

However, the question he lands on earns the read. If you can reverse engineer everything, he asks, what is special about your company, and what is special about you? His own answer is taste, and being at the frontier of the tools.

That answer is half right. Taste may decide what is worth making, but it does not defend what you have made. My own list of candidates for durable advantage is less photogenic: customer relationships, proprietary data, regulatory standing, a reputation for being right when it counted. Whether any of them holds is a strategy question rather than a guarantee, but they share one property a homepage lacks. They cannot be copied from a URL.

If Hassid's account is even roughly accurate, replicating a public interface is now cheap enough that the visible layer is no longer a dependable moat. The audit worth doing is simpler than most strategy exercises: list what a competitor could rebuild from your public website, then ask what is left.
