This will make for a great book/documentary combo in the fullness of time...

For those who were around during the initial dot.bomb crash, the book written about the formerly vaunted e-commerce startup Boo.com had much the same feel: slick founders, immense (at the time) investment, lots of launch parties and no clear monetisation strategy.

That said, boo.com’s failure was largely technology-related (the average customer with a 56k modem simply could not navigate the site effectively) whereas WeWork was largely an anomaly of its time: able to sustain a flawed, unscalable business model due to oceans of cash looking to find some kind of return, while delaying the scrutiny of an IPO by exploiting regulatory changes under the JOBS Act.
