Evidence of the on-going game of ‘buzzword bingo’ in many boardrooms.

I have long observed that achieving a true shift in thinking and perspectives within organisations often requires generational change at senior leadership levels (or a near-death experience... interestingly the latter normally triggers the former, but that’s a topic for another day).

The 90s (and the 00s) saw many boards claim that this ‘internet thing’ was just a passing fad. It took over a decade for it to be taken seriously - requiring a complete reassessment of everything from business operations to competitor strategy to product and service design and delivery.

That shift in thinking usually only followed a ‘refreshing’ of the board.

There are still a significant number of organisations who see ‘digital’ as a stand-alone department or capability.

Against this backdrop, it is clear that the inculcation of design thinking within the boardroom is still quite a while off, and it may require another generational change/refresh.
