I think this can be safely put in the “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should” category of attempted innovation.
But it does point to a wicked problem in need of a solution: if the expectation is that individuals will spend increasingly more of their time interacting with people (and services) that are not physically present, how do you both minimise noise pollution and assure privacy?
Many dispute that people will ever wear AR/XR/VR technologies as a matter of habit and common practice. I disagree. Even 20 years ago if you had said that most people would carry a device for making phone calls on their person at all waking times, you’d have been laughed at.
The barrier was the form factor - people couldn’t conceive a clunky, heavy device like an analogue telephone (or the early model mobile phones) would ever become ubiquitous.
Once the form factor shifted, adoption rates soared, and behaviours shifted immutably.
While current AR/XR/VR devices are similarly clunky and heavy (and have hard battery and compute limits), these issues will be solved in time. Acelerating adoption rates for wireless earbuds are giving us a real-time view of behavioural shifts.
