The wrapper turned out to be the toll road

Venture investors once dismissed OpenRouter as just a wrapper. Stripe has now paid a reported US$7.5 billion for it, and the dismissal and the price tag are the same story told twice.

The company bet early that no single AI model would win everything, when the consensus said one frontier model would absorb every use case. It built a neutral routing layer between developers and dozens of model providers, and when Mistral launched and its price fell eighty per cent within weeks, OpenRouter was where suppliers first competed for developers on cost. It now routes more than ten trillion tokens a day for over ten million developers, on its founder's own numbers.

Two lessons stand out.

First, distribution beats training. A model lab can spend billions on a checkpoint and still struggle to get it into developers' hands. The layer that sits between buyers and many competing suppliers captures durable value precisely because the suppliers compete with each other and the router competes with none of them. Developers do not buy the best model, they buy the easiest way to reach all of them. The wrapper turned out to be the toll road.

Second, and less discussed, is why Stripe wanted it. The investor behind the deal argues that token fraud will become one of the defining security problems of the AI economy, with autonomous agents attacking increasingly valuable token flows. Stripe's core competence is preventing fraud in payment flows. If tokens are becoming a payment flow, this is not a departure for Stripe. It is the same business one layer up.

Organisations locking themselves into a single model vendor should note which side of this trade the smart money took. An architecture that assumes one supplier is a bet about the future, and the market just priced the opposite bet at seven and a half billion dollars. The labs are still competing. The router already won.
