Fluency should raise the standard of proof
One in four people have acted on AI advice for a major life decision, covering health, money and relationships. And the more people use these tools, the less they check what comes back.
That is the uncomfortable finding in F-Secure's survey of 1,500 AI users. Seventy per cent say they check answers only sometimes, rarely or never, and the top reason, cited by 47.3%, is not time pressure or lack of skill. It is that the answer "sounded right". The relationship also runs backwards from what you would hope: 59.7% of heavy, broad users take answers unchecked, against 28.6% of people who keep AI to low-stakes tasks. Familiarity does not build discernment. It lowers the guard.
Polish is a style, not a signal. A confident paragraph feels like evidence, and that feeling quietly does the work that checking used to do. The survey even found that a third of users have asked AI to fact-check AI, which is not verification. It is the same voice agreeing with itself, drawing on the same training data and the same failure modes as the first answer.
I see the organisational version of this most weeks: AI-generated research gliding into board papers because it reads well. But this survey is about people, not institutions, which makes it harder to wave away. The executive who would interrogate a junior analyst's spreadsheet will accept a fluent answer about their mortgage or their health because it arrived sounding certain.
The answer is not to use these tools less. It is to keep one deliberate habit: the more consequential the question, the more independent the checking has to be. Fluency should raise the standard of proof, not lower it.
So two honest questions. When did you last catch yourself nodding along because an answer sounded right? And where is your red line, the decision you would never hand to an AI no matter how confident it sounded?
